Travelling by rail can be a shocking experience (Image: Getty)
TRYING to charge your phone on a British train can be a shocking experience.
Nearly 200 people have suffered electric shocks while riding on trains since 2019.
Many of the shocks occur when passengers attempt to use plug sockets under their seats.
There have been no fatalities but five people required hospital treatment after suffering electrocution while on board on a train.
In 2022 alone, 57 passengers were hit with an electric shock.

Matt Clements of the Rail Safety and Standards Board said: “The most common situation is where a passenger is using the plug sockets underneath seats and tables which are made available to charge laptops and phones. This scenario is where a passenger pulls a plug from underneath the seat, potentially at an awkward angle, which then breaks and leaves a pin inside the socket, which then causes a subsequent person to get a shock when they try plugging their own charger into the same socket later on.”
Mr Clements stressed that with more than six billion journeys taken over the time period only a “very small number” of passengers suffered a shock.
He said: “The train remains one of the safest forms of transport, the car being 20 times less safe in terms of fatality risk. But no one is complacent, and the rail industry has both legal and moral obligations to manage health and safety, and mitigate risk as far as is reasonably practicable to do.”

So far this year, 23 electric shocks have been recorded.
According to the RSSB’s latest report, there were no fatalities in train accidents in 2023-24 despite a 19 per cent increase in passenger journeys.
Efforts are ongoing to tackle deaths from trespass and suicide.
In 2023-24, 10 people were killed while trespassing – five were hit by a train and five were electrocuted. This is down from 20 deaths in 2019-20.
But during the same period, there were 274 suicides and suspected railway suicides – the highest in four years.
Among those who work on the railways, some of the most serious threats to their safety can come from passengers. In 2023-24, 2,793 members of the workforce were injured or recorded shock or trauma due to assault or abuse.
According to the RSSB, “sickness absence in the rail industry is nearly twice the national rate and results in over a million lost work days every year.”
The details about electric shocks on trains were published in response to a question from Grahame Morris MP.
Transport minister Simon Lightwood said: “There have been 198 recorded incidents of passengers being injured through electric shocks on trains in the last five years. During this period, there were zero passenger fatalities on trains as a direct result of electric shocks.”
