Excitement has been growing over the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone which is set to be Malaysia’s next growth catalyst. But not all pieces of the puzzle are falling easily into place, especially on the transport front. There is no clarity yet on the high-speed rail to Kuala Lumpur or the last mile commute from the Rapid Transit System once it terminates in Bukit Chagar in Johor.
On top of that, the electric train service connection to Johor - that already serves the northern and central regions of the west coast - will be further delayed due to problems with connecting to the national power grid.
Speaking of missing pieces, Malaysia is set to restart the search for MH370, a decade after the ill-fated plane disappeared enroute to Beijing. This will be on a “no find, no fee” basis, meaning the government will not pay if no wreckage is found. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said there was “credible evidence” pointing to a new search area in the Indian Ocean.
