The former First Minister remains under investigation by Police Scotland, according to The Scottish Sun, over alleged embezzlement of SNP funds.

Despite the ongoing proceedings, the ex-leader is plotting her return to Holyrood in the next election to the devolved parliament in May 2026.
As a result of her candidacy, announced last week, pro-Union activists armed with leafleats slamming the SNP's record in government took to the streets of Glasgow Southside - the constituency Ms Sturgeon is running in.

The Scottish Daily Express spoke to Alastair Cameron, the chair of Scotland in Union, who was scathing about the former First Minister's tenure.
"We remain active across Scotland, because as long as the SNP are in power, they will prioritise their campaign to break the UK apart, rather than focussing on people's day-to-day needs", he said.
"Our volunteers met many people in the former First Minister's constituency who are sick of the nationalists' obsession, and their incompetence running the country."

Mr Cameron continued: "Like nationalist leaders before and after her, Nicola Sturgeon appeared to focus on building up her personal power and pursuing the SNP's divisive agenda, rather than governing for all Scots.

"Our leaflets describe how Scotland is stronger in the UK, as well as highlighting the damage that nationalism has caused. By voting the SNP out in 2026, Scotland can finally get back to the things that really matter."
Reacting to Ms Sturgeon applying to stand, an SNP spokesperson told The National: “The SNP is lucky to count on a strong and diverse set of candidates.
"We look forward to offering people the opportunity to vote SNP in 2026 for SNP candidates who will work tirelessly to improve the lives of people across Scotland and for an SNP Scottish Government that provides an alternative to Labour cuts.”
