Shoppers using a Tesco Clubcard pay £568 more on average for their weekly shop compared to those who do their shopping at Aldi, according to new analysis from Which?.

Aldi has been named as the UK’s cheapest supermarket of 2024 by the consumer watchdog - beating competitor stores for the fourth year in a row - following analysis of thousands of grocery prices.

Which? tracked the cost of 56 own-label and branded everyday grocery products in December, including milk, baked beans, carrots, Hovis bread and Birds Eye peas, using an independent price comparison website.

At Aldi, the items came to £100.29 on average making the German discounter the cheapest out of eight major supermarkets, including Tesco.

By comparison, Tesco shoppers with a Clubcard pay £10.98 more for the same grocery list, with the 56 items totalling £111.22.

Over the course of a year, the difference in cost compared to Aldi means that Tesco shoppers would pay £568.38 more for 52 weekly grocery shops with a Clubard than customers at Aldi, if prices remain at the same level.

Harry Rose, editor of Which? magazine, said: “Our research shows Aldi has retained its crown as the UK’s cheapest supermarket in 2024. After the added expense of the festive period, many households will be looking to cut costs.

“Our analysis shows that by switching supermarkets, shoppers can make significant savings, highlighting the advantages of shopping around where possible.”

But Which? also compared the average cost of a bigger shop of 158 items - with this analysis excluding Aldi and Lidl as they didn’t stock many of the branded items - and found Tesco to be the cheapest supermarket for Clubcard holders.

The total cost came to £410.40, although Tesco shoppers that don’t have a Clubcard would have paid £30 more on average.

Asda was the cheapest supermarket for bigger shops for shoppers that aren’t signed up to any loyalty schemes at Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.
