Archaeologists have made a major find which “reconstructs history” in the region of Egypt where Tutankhamun was found.

       The researchers found 11 wooden coffins - eleven for adults and one for a child - inside rocky tombs and burial shafts hundreds of feet beneath the surface of the city of Luxor.

       A treasure trove of artefacts was also discovered, which may help shine a light on what life was like 3600 years ago.

       The haul included bronze coins, carrying the image of Alexander the Great, which dated to the Time of Ptolemy I (367-283BC). There were also clay children's toys and funerary masks concealing mummies, winged scarabs, beads and amulets.

       Over centuries looters are believed to have stolen items from the tombs, but left behind pottery tables offering bread, wine, meat, and archery bows. This suggests the tombs may have been connected to the Egyptian military.

       The remains of Hatshepsut's Valley Temple was also discovered for the first time.

       Hatshepsut was the first female pharaoh of Egypt, ruling from around 1479 to 1458BC.

       The discovery was announcecd by Zahi Hawass Foundation for Antiquities & Heritage, which is an organisation that aims to preserve Egypt's heritage and antiquities.

       The city of Luxor is historically known for being home to the Valley of Kings where Tutankhamun was found.

       Several mummies and grand structures have been discovered in the area since the 1800s. So many that the area became known as the “Great Necropolis of Millions of Years of Pharaoh”.
