BT has gone down for thousands with customers struggling to access their emails.

More than 4,600 customers have already logged complaints on the Downdetector website - a website which measures outages.

According to the website, more than 90% of the reported problems relate to email.

It appears the issue began earlier this morning, with many people taking to social media to express their frustration.

One X user wrote: "Oh, for heaven’s sake! What on EARTH is happening to @bt_uk’s #email service? It’s been down for some time … !"

Another person said: "@bt_uk email down . Any update would be very welcome ....!!!!!"

A second user asked BT to provide an update on the situation, tagging BT they said: "Hey! I know you guys are monitoring this .. can you please give us an update re. Email?”

The user asked if BT could explain whether it is trying to resolve a problem so they know it is not an issue with personal accounts.

A BT spokesperson has now told the Daily Express: “We’re aware that some BT email customers are unable to access their email on webmail and via the app.

"We’re investigating the cause of this and we’re sorry for any inconvenience caused.

“Alternatively, customers can switch off wifi and use mobile data to access their email. No other BT service is impacted.”

Those experiencing a problem with their email access can get in touch with BT support via its live chat service or over the phone.

More details on how to get in touch can be found here on BT’s website.

BT also runs mobile network EE and last month announced that from the end of next month all new and existing mobile customers will face either a percentage increase or a specific pounds and pence rise.

The increase will begin on March 31.

In a message to its customers, BT said: “Our annual price change is never an easy conversation to have with customers. It is, however, an important part of how we cover our increasing costs and keep investing in our networks and services to do more for the people we serve.”

BT’s email issue comes after HSBC customers reportedly had trouble with their online banking apps earlier this week after an apparent outage.
