Experts have revealed the places that could become "hotspots" for Brits looking to escape a new 100% tax in Spain.

The proposed levy would be imposed on the value of properties bought by non-residents of the Iberian state from countries outside the EU, including the UK.

Now, managing partner of Get Golden Visa, Murat Coskun, has said that the policy "marks a significant shift in the country’s stance on foreign investments".

He added that it sends a "clear message" regarding Spain's efforts to address its housing affordability crisis and regulate immigration policies.

Alternatives include Portugal, which the firm describes as a "go-to option for British citizens seeking a 'Plan B' without committing to a full relocation".

Reportedly, 234 UK nationals secured a golden visa - a residency permit or citizenship program that allows wealthy individuals to move to another country - in 2023, making the UK the third-largest nationality in the program.

Get Golden Visa added: "Staying in Portugal for only seven days a year is enough to maintain a Golden Visa status. In addition, the right to apply for Portuguese citizenship arises after five years from the first application, and there is no obligation to stay or be present in Portugal."

Another option is Greece, which has "become a hotspot for British investors looking for lifestyle real estate".

More than 17,000 Britons are already calling Greece home, experts say, and the sunny state has "competitive property prices" compared to other European destinations.

Finally, high net worth individuals, Italy is "making waves with attractive tax incentives".

GGV said: "Italy offers significant tax incentives, allowing new residents to replace regular taxation on foreign income with a €100,000 annual lump sum.

"Dependents can also benefit from an additional €25,000 per year. These incentives are valid for 15 years, positioning Italy as a compelling option for wealthy British expats seeking both financial and lifestyle advantages."

It comes after Mike Harvey, managing director at 1st Move International, said that Cyprus is becoming an increasingly popular choice for Brits looking to relocate.

He added: "Our internal data shows it was the 6th most sought-after destination between 2022 and 2024. The island offers a great Mediterranean lifestyle, featuring sunny weather, affordable living, and a welcoming environment.

"With English widely spoken, expat-friendly tax perks, and a relaxed yet lively atmosphere, it’s clear why Cyprus is gaining traction as a top destination for those seeking a vibrant lifestyle abroad.”
