Europe's hottest city where temperature soars to 40C is just 3 hours from UK

Europe’s hottest city that could hit sweltering 40C in summer is just three hours away from the UK and is a perfect place for a warm getaway.

Valletta, the capital of Malta, experiences an average temperature of 19.3C, and daytime averages around 23C annually.

However, with its proximity to Africa, Malta can even see the mercury hit 40C during summer heatwaves in July and August.

The hot weather conditions are sometimes caused by the Sirocco winds from Africa.

Originating in the Sahara Desert, these warm, moisture-laden winds sweep across the Mediterranean, bringing hot, arid conditions to North Africa and Southern Europe. At times, they can intensify to hurricane-force speeds.

In July 2023, temperatures soared to 42.7C, while last summer saw highs of 37C with a 'real feel' of 40C. The record-breaking day in Malta's history was in August 1999, when it reached a scorching 43.8C.

Along with its warm weather, the charming city has a lot to offer.

Known for its Baroque architecture, stunning harbours, and cultural heritage, Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One of the visitors wrote on TripAdvisor forum: “The city of Valletta is so historic with history from medieval times when the knights of Malta built the city to the time of British Malta.

“If you are going to visit Valletta, I highly recommend you use the local public buses to travel to the medieval capital city of Valletta. Valletta is a wonderful medieval city with so much to see and do. From its history to its shopping and also its restaurants, cafes, and bars.

“Valletta is home to Malta's government in the old grandmaster Palace from the day of the knights of Malta.

“I would highly recommend you take a walk down one of Valletta's many city streets to explore and see all of Valletta's architecture and history it has to offer.

“I also recommend you visit the grand harbour in Valletta with its stunning views of Valletta and also its stunning views of the coast line from the grand harbour. I would highly recommend a visit to Malta's capital city, Valletta. ( I would rate Valletta capital of Malta, with 5 stars).”

Tourists can visit St John's Co-Cathedral, which showcases Baroque art with a stunning interior and works by Caravaggio. The Valletta waterfront that is lined with restaurants and cafes is also a must-visit.

A direct flight from London to Valletta comes around approximately to £26.
