Kemi Badenoch has hit her stride, presenting herself as the woman who can save Britain from the triple-threat of Sir Keir Starmer, Rachel Reeves and Angela Rayner.
The Conservative leader confronted Sir Keir with a new zeal at Prime Minister’s Questions this week. She knows that employers are about to be hit with the Chancellor’s “jobs tax” and are braced for Ms Rayner’s turbo-charging of workers’ rights.

This attack came in the immediate wake of Ms Reeves delivering her landmark speech on how she intends to boost growth, in which she declared her support for a third runway at Heathrow.

It will be a long time before the new landing strip arrives and Mrs Badenoch knows businesses are worried about how the hike in National Insurance contributions coming in April. This is a chance for the Conservatives to try and reclaim their reputation as the go-to defender of enterprise.
She described being contracted by an employer in Exeter who is “terrified” to take on new staff and warned that Ms Rayner’s plans for workers’ rights will increase businesses’ costs by ￡5billion.
Far from boosting growth, she told the Commons, Labour is “destroying” it. And far from protecting jobs, she claimed, its new legislation is not an “Employment Bill” but an “Unemployment Bill”.
The consequences of the coming changes, she argued, would be higher prices, fewer jobs and less growth.
Challenging Sir Keir to put a halt to the Deputy PM’s plans, she said: “He needs to stop being a lawyer and start being a leader.”
The PM came to PMQs armed with a retort of his own: “We know she’s not a lawyer. She’s clearly not a leader and if she carries on like this she is going to be the next lettuce.”
He does not try to hide his exasperation with his opposite number, accusing her of “talking absolute nonsense” and saying – not for the first time – that she has “got a nerve”.
That is precisely why Tory members gave Mrs Badenoch the job of leading the party away from its electoral disaster and putting it back on the path to power.

Winning back trust on the economy is key to the Conservatives’s future. It is hard for the party to compete with Reform UK on immigration, and Labour will do everything to pin the NHS’s problems on 14 years of Conservative stewardship of the health service.
But if Mrs Badenoch can tap into widely-held worries about the economy and cast herself as a powerful champion of both jobs and growth then Sir Keir and Ms Reeves are in true trouble.
