A senior Labour minister has sparked fury after it was claimed he told a rural conference that farmers are "not high on the pecking order" of the government.
Daniel Zeichner, Minister of State for Food, Farming and Fisheries, was speaking at the Norfolk Farming Conference this morning when he was accused of making the remarks.

Stuart Maggs, a law and tax expert attending the conference, reported that Mr Zeichner insisted farmers could not hope for more cash to mitigate the inheritance tax row as farming is "not high on Labour's pecking order".
Asked by a fellow X user if the minister really used this phrase, Mr Maggs doubled down on the claim.
He added: "I want to be as clear as possible on Daniel Zeichner’s comment during a question".

"He was asked about support, and that ￡2.4billion a year was promised seven years ago, so ￡5billion over two years today wasn’t worth as much.
"Mr Zeichner said the money in farming was now only public money for public good, and we would have to accept that farming was not high on the pecking order.”
A second source in the room confirmed to the Daily Express that the minister used his "down the pecking order" phrase twice in response to two different audience questions regarding financial support for the industry.
Mr Zeichner also reportedly told the room: "The Budget is what the Budget is.”
The second source described the comments as causing the "atmosphere in the entire building to just go”.

One farmer in the audience publicly blasted the minister for just turning up to "tell us everything we want to hear" but ignoring the widespread concerns about the Government's planned tax hike.
Mr Zeichner added: “The future of farming not about getting more government money.”
"If you start untangling the budget, you put the whole economy at risk."
Reacting to the comments Mo Metcalf-Fisher from the Countryside Alliance told the Express: "If true, these comments are deeply concerning and couldn't come at a more politically sensitive time- when as the major demonstration in yesterday showed- farmers do not feel supported or understood by Government.”
"It is difficult to think of many issues more important than our national food security and the long term stability of British farming”.

Farmer Russell McKenzie fumed: “Just in case this doesn’t come as a surprise, proof that UKLabour really don’t value farming or food production in the UK”.
“Staggeringly unbelievable if these are the words uttered by Daniel Zeichner.”
Yesterday Keir Starmer's official spokesman insisted that the government's commitment to farmers is "steadfast", arguing it recently committed ￡5 billion to support "their vital role in delivering food security to people around the UK”.
The comments came a day after thousands of farmers descended on Westminster to protest against Rachel Reeves's inheritance tax raid.
Mr Zeichner told the conference that the reform was part of a "difficult set of decisions" by the government.
The Daily Express's Save Britain's Family Farms has demanded a U-turn.
