KARACHI: The Sindh government has planned to revamp its motor vehicle inspection system (MVIS) in order to enhance vehicle fitness standards, improve road safety and reduce environmental pollution.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs) had been issued for motor vehicle inspectors across Sindh.

He said that the provincial government was in the process of establishing inspection facilities in Saeedabad, Malir and Keamari for ensuring comprehensive inspection of vehicles.

He said that for effective management, Karachi will be divided into two zones — East and West.

Similar facilities are also being set up in other districts, he added.

       New fitness certificates

The minister, who holds the portfolios of information and transport, said that the government had introduced new motor vehicle fitness certificates with modern security features like barcodes.

He said that the new certificates would prevent issuance of fake certificates and increase revenue for the government.

He said that the motor vehicle inspectors must follow SOPs to ensure uniformity and accountability in the issuance of fitness certificates.

Mr Memon announced that the transport department would notify the cut-off date of new certificates, and any old fitness certificates issued will be null and void from that day onwards.

Besides, all the old records that are present in MVI wings across Sindh will be confiscated and a central database of fitness certificates will be maintained through an Android application, he added.

He said assistance would be taken from the law enforcement agencies, such as traffic police, district SSPs and motorway police and regular snap-checking would be conducted by designated officers.
