More than 3,500 people are being approved for new incapacity claims every single day according to government statistics. The figures produced by the Department of Work and Pensions show that under Labour, the amount of people being signed off work each day is higher than at any time this decade, including the height of the covid-19 pandemic.
MPs will vote today on a range of reforms to the welfare system aimed at cutting the number of people claiming benefits in a bid to get more people back into work. However, plans have changed fundamentally in the last week after it emerged that more than 100 Labour rebels were threatening to give the prime minister a humiliating defeat in the commons by voting against the bill. Labour could still face a significant rebellion at today’s vote in a major test of Keir Starmer’s leadership.

Labour MP Debbie Abrahams, who negotiated the concessions alongside Dame Meg Hillier, said on Monday that ministers had rowed back on what had been agreed.
Although she described the concessions as “good”, Ms Abrahams said the rebels were “not quite there yet” on a deal with the Government.

“There are some issues around that.” The Government’s partial reversal on cuts will cost taxpayers around £2.5 billion by 2030, Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall told MPs as she laid out concessions to Labour rebels.
The staggering graph shows how sharply approvals have risen since last year’s general election when claims were a little over 2,000.
The figures show that the number of under-35s claiming incapacity benefit has increased by 60% in the past five years.

Official estimates show that more than 150,000 people could still be pushed into relative poverty by the welfare measures, down from estimates of 250,000 prior to the government’s concessions.
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has confirmed that her party will vote against the measures, despite previously hinting that they might back the government depending on the detail of the bill.

She said: “The welfare budget is out of control. Spending on health and disability benefits was £40 billion just before Covid and it is now projected to be £100 billion by 2030.
“What Labour is doing is not serious welfare reform. Last week we challenged them to cut the welfare budget, to bring in measures that would get people back into work, and to assure us there wouldn’t be new taxes to fill the gap.
“Keir Starmer has not met those challenges, in fact he’s watered down the small savings Labour were making. We have a government that is incapable of governing. For that reason, we will be voting against the welfare bill tomorrow.”
