Keir Starmer has been plunged into crisis this morning as tens of thousands of doctors walk out on strike, dealing a huge blow to Labour's pledges to bring the NHS back from the brink and bring down waiting lists.
Despite enormous pay rises over the past year, up to 50,000 resident - or junior - doctors will join the picket lines today from 7am, and remain there until 7am on Wednesday, July 30.

The move deals an enormous blow to Labour's pledges around the NHS, to end Tory strike chaos and bring down waiting lists.
Doctors in England and Wales had been awarded a 5.4% pay increase by the government - the highest of any public sector workers - however the radical left-wing BMA union is demanding a ludicrous 29.2% pay rise to bring pay in line with 2008 levels.
YouGov polling found that over half of all Britons now side against the striking doctors, with 52% saying they either somewhat or strongly oppose the strike action.

Top Tory mocks Wes Streeting
Senior Tory Andrew Griffith, the shadow Business Secretary, has mocked Wes Streeting this morning, saying: "Today we #standwithWes who has just discovered that not every trade union has the best interests of service users or those running an organisation at its heart.
"Conservatives in the Lords have done an excellent job on making amendments to the Employment Rights Bill. Perhaps now this socialist government will listen?"
The Government is currently making it easier for trade unions to go on strike.

Over half of public oppose today's walk out
Over half of all Britons oppose today's strike action by junior doctors, according to the most recent YouGov poll.
In a big turnaround of public opinion, 52% of those asked said they either somewhat or strongly oppose today's walkout.
Just 34% sided with junior doctors, while 13% were unsure.
This is a big contrast to their strike in 2023 under the previous Tory government, when 56% of Brits said they supported the strike compared to 33% opposed.

BMA strike ballot turnout was one of lowest ever
The turnout for the coming days' BMA strike action was just 55%, one of the lowest ever.
For the ballot to be successful, the ballot must also meet voting thresholds which include:
- at least 50% of eligible members must respond to the ballot
- at least 40% of eligible members must vote yes if they work for an important public service

Starmer warns BMA they are 'playing into Nigel Farage's hands'
Keir Starmer has warned the BMA that they're playing into the hands of Nigel Farage by walking out on strike today.
Writing in The Times, the Prime Minister warns: "The BMA leadership should be under no illusions. Whatever their motives, this action will play into the hands of those who do not want our NHS to succeed in its current form.”
Labour has previously warned that Nigel Farage is relying on the government to fail on its promises around the NHS in order to get into No. 10 at the next election.

Tories slam Labour's 'spineless union surrender' last year
The Tories have lashed out at Wes Streeting's "spinless surrender to union demands" last year, which saw junior doctors given a 22% pay rise without linking it to much-needed health reforms.
Shadow health secretary Stuart Andrew said: “While the NHS battles record pressures, another wave of doctor strikes is dragging hospitals into chaos. These walkouts leave wards understaffed, operations cancelled and patients dangerously exposed — with minimum service levels now hanging by a thread.
“Labour’s spineless surrender to union demands last year opened the door to this. They handed out inflation-busting pay rises without reform, and now the BMA are back for more. They are disrupting care, ignoring patients and gambling with lives. This is a betrayal of the NHS and those who rely on it.
“The public deserves hospitals where the doctors are on the frontline rather than the picket line. But every day Labour refuses to stand up to union overreach, Britain moves closer to a health service run on the unions’ terms rather than the patients’.”
