The daughter of a much-loved Conservative MP who was murdered by an Islamic terrorist has furiously condemned a Labour MP for rejecting calls for a public inquiry into his death. Sir David Amess, the Conservative MP for Southend West, was stabbed to death by Ali Harbi Ali, a fanatic inspired by Islamic State, at a constituency surgery on 15 October 2021.
Sir David's daughter Katie Amess has been bravely campaigning since her father's death for the circumstances around his murder to be subject to the scrutiny of a public inquiry. It has already emerged that the Government's terror monitoring body, Prevent, had let Harbi Ali slip through the net after he was referred to them seven years before he stabbed Sir David 20 times at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea. Despite the obvious failings, the Home Secretary Yvette Cooper rejected calls for a public inquiry in March, telling both Sir David's widow, Lady Amess, and Katie Amess that it was "hard to see how an inquiry would be able to go beyond" a recently published 'learning review' of the incident. Refusing to be fobbed off, determined Katie Amess has now shared another response she received from one of Ms Cooper's Labour MP colleagues, in which he has also rejected the idea of an inquiry.

Labour MP James Firth wrote on April 17 he did not believe an inquiry would "be productive" despite admitting that the handling of Harbi Ali by organisations had been "sub-optimal". He added "lessons must be learned from these mistakes", but concluded: "All questions and considerations around Sir David's murder have been thoroughly answered, and a public inquiry would not go beyond what we already know in this tragic case".
Sharing the letter on social media, Sir David's daughter branded it a "disgrace". She said: "I presume you do not support the Southport inquiry either then since they also got a learning review and the perpetrator is in prison?

"You admit yourself Prevent failed, and handling was 'sub optimal' then you go on to spout the same old line that 'lessons will be learned'. What lessons exactly?!
"If Southport hadn't of happened my learning review would never have been released. If it was your dad this happened to I doubt you would be so keen to just carry on with your life. Totally heartless. Hang your head in shame. You are not fit to be an MP."

Ali Harbi Ali was sentenced to a whole-life order at the Old Bailey in 2022, having been found guilty of murder and preparing acts of terrorism.
Ms Amess's comments come as the words of an Irish rap band Kneecap have been thrown into the spotlight after video has emerged from a November 2023 gig appearing to show one member saying: "The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP."
Scotland Yard is looking into the incident, along with another concert from November 2024 in which a member of the band appeared to shout "up Hamas, up Hezbollah" - groups which are banned as terrorist organisations in the UK.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said it was "good" the police were looking into the allegation, adding: "Kneecap's glorification of terrorism and anti-British hatred has no place in our society. Now footage shows one of them saying: 'The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP'.
"After the murder of Sir David Amess, this demands prosecution."
Katie Amess told BBC's Good Morning Ulster: "It is just beyond belief that human beings would speak like that in this day and age and it is extremely dangerous."

She said "to say to kill anybody, what on earth are they thinking", warning there were "absolute nutters" who could try to act upon the comments allegedly made by Kneecap.
She called on the group to apologise, saying she was "absolutely gobsmacked at the stupidity of somebody or a group of people being in the public eye and saying such dangerous, violent rhetoric".
Sir Keir Starmer's official spokesman said the Prime Minister believed the comments were "completely unacceptable" and "condemns them in the strongest possible terms".
