Angela Rayner is fighting for her political future (Image: Getty)
Angela Rayner is fighting for her political future after admitting she underpaid stamp duty on her seaside flat. The Deputy Prime Minister has referred herself to both the Government’s independent ethics adviser and to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) after making the admission.
The Conservatives have called for the taxman to go further and investigate whether Ms Rayner has evaded tax, which would be illegal. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch and Reform’s Nigel Farage have both called for the Deputy Prime Minister to resign.

But Sir Keir Starmer is “determined” to save his deputy, according to the Times. “He wants to do everything he can,” an ally of the Prime Minister told the newspaper. At Prime Minister’s Questions, Sir Keir gave his backing to Ms Rayner, telling MPs he was “very proud to sit alongside” her.

Jeremy Corbyn weighs in to Rayner scandal - by offering her a place in his party
Jeremy Corbyn said Angela Rayner would be welcome to join his new hard-Left party if she were to be sacked from Labour amid the row over her tax affairs.
Asked about the scandal, Mr Corbyn told Sky News: “I’m more worried about housing policy, I’m more worried about overcrowding, I’m more worried about the lack of regulation of the private rented sector.
“And it’s sort of a truism of British politics that the whole media story, the whole of Parliament, becomes obsessed with her personal living arrangements and whatever property she owns or doesn’t own and diverts conveniently away from the issue that Parliament should be addressing, which is the hundreds of thousands of people in desperate need of good quality housing.”
“It’s a bit odd that she’s given advice that she doesn’t need to pay, then she’s given some second advice she does need to pay. I find that strange.”
Pressed on whether he would welcome her into Your Party if Ms Rayner was removed from Labour, Mr Corbyn replied: “I don’t think she’s any plans to join but obviously anyone is very free to join our party and we welcome them all. Because we’ve already got 700,000 [registrants] which is about three times of the Labour Party.”

Could Rayner be out by Christmas?
Bridget Phillipson has declined to say whether Angela Rayner would still be Deputy Prime Minister at Christmas.
Asked whether Ms Rayner would still be in the role, the Education Secretary told LBC she would not "speculate on or pre-judge" the outcome of an investigation by the Prime Minister's ethics adviser.
She said: "We've got a process that's under way with the independent adviser.
"I'm not going to get into hypotheticals or speculate. I'm sorry to disappoint you. I'm just not going to do it. That process will run its course."

Rayner received more legal advice on Wednesday
Angela Rayner received "final legal advice" on her tax affairs on Wednesday, the Education Secretary has said, but she would not say when the Prime Minister was aware his deputy had underpaid tax.
Bridget Phillipson told Sky News: "The Deputy Prime Minister sought advice at the point of purchase of the house, which enacted in line with the advice that she received.
"She then subsequently sought expert advice on that. That original version returned on Monday, but it wasn't later clarified until the Wednesday further questions that were addressed through the advice."
She added that it was only once a court order preventing discussion of Ms Rayner's tax affairs was lifted "on Tuesday evening" and "once final legal advice that was returned on Wednesday" that the position could be set out.
Asked whether the Prime Minister had known Ms Rayner had underpaid tax on Monday, Ms Phillipson said: "The Deputy Prime Minister has been clear for some time that she believed she had acted in good faith, that she had paid what was required of her through that house purchase.
"It then became clear subsequently that that wasn't the case, that additional stamp duty was owed.
"That was following new, fresh legal advice, but as I say there were limitations on what could be discussed given the existence of a court order that was there to protect her family and to protect her son."

Minister refuses to say if Angela Rayner should resign
Bridget Phillipson declined to say whether Angela Rayner should resign if she had been found to have breached ministerial standards.
Asked whether Ms Rayner should resign if the Prime Minister's standards adviser found she had broken the rules, the Education Secretary told Times Radio: "I appreciate the answer I'm about to give will be frustrating, but there is a process, I'm not going to pre-judge it.
"It is right now that the independent adviser does his work and provides that outcome."

Labour minister denies Rayner hypocrisy
Bridget Phillipson has said the row over Angela Rayner's tax affairs was not like scandals under the previous government as she had "sought to be transparent".
The Education Secretary told Times Radio: "What we saw in some of those cases in the past was a lack of scrutiny and a lack of transparency.
"The Deputy Prime Minister has sought to be transparent, has set out in some detail, which has been difficult given that it relates to her family, extensive information.
"It's now in the hands of the independent adviser. That is important, that wasn't always the case under the previous government, around the approach that they took.
"But transparency and accountability and standards in public life, of course they matter to us as a Government, and they matter to the Prime Minister, and now it's right that as part of that process the independent adviser can do his work and can reach a conclusion."

Rayner received new legal advice on Monday
Angela Rayner received fresh legal advice on her tax affairs on Monday, the Education Secretary has said.
Bridget Phillipson told Times Radio that Ms Rayner had been "open, she set out the information and referred herself to the independent adviser".
Responding to the suggestion the Deputy Prime Minister could have set out the position a week earlier, Ms Phillipson said: "She sought legal advice, fresh legal advice, expert advice, which came back on Monday, then applied to the court to have the necessary order lifted on Tuesday, and made a full public statement and gave an interview on Wednesday.
"So, she has acted in good faith, sought to act appropriately with the information available to her."
