Poland has reopened two border crossings with Belarus and is urging its citizens to leave Belarusian territory without delay. According to the Polish Embassy in Minsk, the Terespol-Brest border crossing has been reopened for passenger traffic, while the Koroszczyn-Kozlovichi crossing is operational for freight transport.

The Polish Embassy emphasised that due to rising tensions, ongoing military activity in the region and cases of arbitrary arrests of Polish citizens, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly advises against any travel to Belarus. "In the event of a sudden deterioration of the security situation, border closures or other unforeseen circumstances, evacuation may become significantly more difficult or even impossible. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges Polish citizens currently on the territory of the Republic of Belarus to leave immediately using available commercial or private means of transport," its statement read.

Since September 12, all crossings on Poland's border with Belarus have been closed. Cross-border movement has halted in both directions due to the joint Russo-Belarusian military exercises known as Zapad-2025.

Earlier this month, around 30,000 soldiers took part in the Russian-led Zapad exercise, joined this year by India. They took part in ballistic missile launches and simulated airstrikes across Russia, the Arctic, the Baltic Sea and Belarus. The Indian defence ministry said it had dispatched 65 personnel, including elements of the Kumaon Regiment, one of the army’s most respected units. The ministry added that these troops would be involved in "joint training, tactical drills and special arms skills" with Russia.

In March, Poland suspended the right of migrants to apply for asylum when they arrived at its border with Belarus. It came at a time when Poland was strengthening its border with Belarus due to what it described as migration being used as a hybrid war tactic. The Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, accused Belarusian border guards of aiding would-be migrants, many of whom are from Africa and the Middle East, to destabilise Poland and tie up resources.

NATO warned Russia that it would respond decisively to any further breaches of its airspace following two incidents (Image: Getty)

Tensions in Eastern Europe have been on the rise in recent weeks, as NATO warned Russia that it would respond decisively to any further breaches of its airspace following two incidents.

Russian drones have also been downed over Poland, while Estonia said three Russian MiG-31 military aircraft had flown into its airspace earlier this month.

Also this week, suspected Russian drones caused major disruption at Copenhagen and Oslo airports. While authorities did not directly name suspects as of Tuesday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen hinted at possible Kremlin involvement in what she described as the "most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date".
