Little was made of Putin's viciousness in Chechnya, perhaps because that suited Western narratives at the time....
We did exactly that sort of thing when we armed all sorts of groups in Afghanistan, and that didn't work out too well for America either....
We saw what happened in 2014 when the free world did not do enough to contain Putin's aggression....
